Medical Meditation: Using Food and Western Practices to Heal the Body

I admit it, I am late to the #MedicalMedium books. When my sister first told me about the book Medical Medium by Anthony William, a recommendation from the functional medicine team she’s been working with, I was amused. Envisioning Teresa from Long Island Medium somehow merged with Edgar Cayce, a well known Medical Intuitive from the early 1900’s, I was intrigued enough to borrowed my sisters copy to read at the beach. I could-not-put-it-down.

Disclosure: I have no medical training (my sister is the nurse). I don’t believe everything I read – far from it. And admittedly, I rely quite a bit on the intuitive feelings I get, I’ve always been weird that way. My book report in one word, ‘gob-struck’  – aka speechless and amazed. At almost every chapter and in-between sunscreen applications, I was reading paragraphs out loud to my sister, in awe of how much sense this book was making. It was explaining my medical history, and connecting dots in ways that modern medicine hasn’t even thought of.

The Diagnosis

A little background… Last fall I started a functional medicine program and was shocked to see a laundry list of aliments that came back from the tests that were run. I was obviously aware of my fatigue, some pesky ‘hormonal acne’, and joint pain (knees, shoulders, elbows, stiff feet). I also found out that gluten and I weren’t friends but my primary goal in running the tests were to understand why I had early onset of menopause and never-ending tennis elbow.

The test results were very illuminating:

  • Not burning fat or carbs (no energy)
  • Protein defficient
  • H. Pylori (low stomach acid needed to absorb nutrients)
  • Full Body/Brain Inflammation (cell damage, contributes to joint pain, acne, fatigue)
  • Insulin resistent
  • Hashimotos (Thyroid disorder)
  • Menopausal level hormone levels (erm, a bit early?)
  • Sluggish Liver (detoxing only 50%)
  • Very high serotonin

My acupuncturist has been telling me for 15 years my liver is not optimal and I have on-going fatigue. Now I know why! I’ve also since learned of uterine fibroids and an ovarian cyst. All very common. The amazing thing is I feel pretty good. I can’t imagine what someone who is “sick” feels like. There is one thing that connects all of this…

Meditation

The day I got these results, I sat my arse down on my meditation cushion and was like, okay universe – what gives? Immediately I knew, you are not blessing your food. Gah! As someone who is relatively disciplined in their spiritual practice, meditation, yoga, healthy eating, positive thinking etc., I was amazed at how destabilizing one ‘not too great’ component of your practice can be to your entire being.

When I asked my mentor Derek O’Neill about this, he explained (paraphrasing) that Spirit, Mind and Body are 3 pillars of our being, but if the physical body is not healthy, it can inhibit progress in our spiritual growth. Say what now? Of course, my mind went straight to “have all my efforts for years been for naught?” He also explained how it would take up to 3 years to restore this balance once I started blessing my food. Funny enough, my functional medicine doctor said the same thing, in different words. Stating that when someone practiced gratitude at meal time, within 3 years, their systems were performing optimally. Huh. Science and Spirit meet again.

Living Food, Blessing Food

So how do you bless your food? You just approach meal time with gratitude. There is no crazy ceremony or fanfare, just mindfulness. You appreciate the efforts of the chef, the colours on your plate, the aroma of the food, the energy of the food, and if you eat meat, reverence for the being who gave its life to sustain yours. The vibes you create, infuses your environment – it’s like sprinkling happy salt on your meals. Turn off the devices, get away from the TV. Purify your space. You are energy, you are consuming energy – so make it positive energy.

I think most are aware that making up a large portion of your meals with living food (fruits, veg, nuts, seeds) offers the body the most nutrient dense support, which in-turn supports all your systems. I recall watching Sadhguru, an Indian mystic, explain the purpose of food energy to Chef Gordon Ramsey… entertaining!

Medical Medium – Dun, Dun, Dah! The Cause.

So back to my medical news…. after reading Medical Medium, I read the Thyroid Healing book. The net of the story is that all my symptoms are caused by the same thing – Epstein Barr. It is responsible for a host of issues under the auto-immune umbrella that impact joints, lungs, blood cells, nerves, and kidneys. Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid disorders, lupus, Lyme disease, tinnitus, vertigo, and much more.

This virus is also connected to every single symptom I had in childhood such as mono, chickpox, strep, bronchitis, etc. Anthony William writes:

“The Epstein-Barr virus has created a secret epidemic. Out of the roughly 320 million people in the U.S., over 225 million Americans have some form of EBV that’s affecting their life. Medical communities are aware of only one version of EBV, but there are actually over 60 varieties. They have no idea how the virus operates long-term and how problematic it can be. “

Celery Juice & Detox Smoothie

The first step to healing outlined in his books, is restoring the digestive system. Fresh juiced celery juice starts my morning. I am also doing the detox smoothies, ginger water, lemon water and aloe water, which are all meant to pull and flush the heavy metals out of the body, so they won’t continue to feed the Epstein Barr pathogens. This combined with the food elimination (no pork, dairy, sugar, gluten: corn/wheat or eggs) and supplements like cats claw, lemon balm and others help the body kill the virus and restore health.

The first few days I noticed how minimal my hunger was, you may also notice your bowels move a bit more frequently. I would get very minor dizzy spells – maybe it is better described as momentary head fuzziness. These are normal and mild detox symptoms. Headaches, acne and skin breakouts are not uncommon when your body starts a purge. Be kind, be patient.

There is so much more in the books that I can’t begin to tap into here. I highly recommend you download a copy if you are fighting a known or mysterious illness.

I will keep you update on my progress.  In the meantime, don’t forget to Celebrate Your Divine Being!
